CITY FALL AT SCUNTHORPE

The Bantams suffered defeat at the Sands Venue Stadium - losing 2-0 to Scunthorpe United in Sky Bet League Two.

Goals from Abo Eisa and Devarn Green condemned City - who created chances throughout - to defeat at the Iron.

The hosts had the first chance of the evening after Eisa bent his 20-yard free-kick towards the top corner, but Richard O’Donnell jumped up and tipped it over the bar for a Scunthorpe corner.

The Iron were ahead in the fifth minute when former Bantam Alex Gilliead drove towards City's final third before playing through to Eisa, who calmly slotted it past O’Donnell to take the lead.

Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars’ side responded well and came close to levelling in the eighth minute when Charles Vernam turned away from his defender on the edge of the 18-yard box and smacked the crossbar with his curling effort towards the far corner.

City hit the woodwork again in the 21st minute when Elliot Watt unleashed a dipping free-kick at goal, which struck the inside of the post and bounced away to be cleared by a Scunthorpe defender.

Neil Cox’s side looked to extend their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Eisa played Devarn Green in behind the Bantams’ defence. The Scunthorpe forward took it under control but had his shot from close range smothered by O’Donnell.

City began the second half on the front foot and came close to equalising when Ollie Crankshaw crossed in for Andy Cook.

The 30-year-old striker headed back across goal to Charles Vernam who lashed his shot just wide of the post.

The Iron doubled their advantage in the 59th minute when the ball was floated towards the back post to Ryan Loft who headed down towards Green.

The 24-year-old let the ball come across his body and rifled his effort into the bottom-right corner from six yards out.

Scunthorpe almost wrapped up the points with two clear chances. Ryan Loft beared down on goal but had his shot saved by O’Donnell before Gilliead tried his luck, but the City stopper was equal to it again.

The Bantams had a chance to pull one back in the 83rd minute when Gareth Evans crossed in towards the centre of the penalty area. Paudie O’Connor rose highest to meet the corner but headed wide of the target.

Several chances followed for the visitors following a large spell of pressure in second-half stoppage time, but they failed to capitalise on them - meaning Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars' side left the Sands Venue Stadium empty handed.
