BANTAMS IN SCUNTHORPE STALEMATE

1 May 2021

The Bantams and Scunthorpe United shared the spoils in the club's annual memorial fixture - with a 0-0 draw in Sky Bet League Two.

Neither team proved able to capitalise on their goal-scoring opportunities as City had to settle for a point in their final game at the Utilita Energy Stadium in the 2020/21 campaign.

The day began with respects paid to those who tragically lost their lives in the Valley Parade Fire Disaster of 11th May 1985 - as a minute's silence was observed after wreaths were laid in the centre of the field to 'You'll Never Walk Alone'.

The visitors had the first attempt of the game when Emmanuel Onariase’s long-range volley flew over the crossbar.

City then had a chance to break the deadlock when Levi Sutton played in Charles Vernam whose right-footed effort was denied by Mark Howard.

Neil Cox’s men went close to hitting the front when Kevin van Veen’s header was tipped over the crossbar by Bantams goalkeeper Sam Hornby.

The Iron also nearly took the lead from the resulting corner when skipper Alex Gilliead’s delivery to the far post was headed just wide by Alfie Beestin.

It was the hosts' turn to have an attempt when Elliot Watt’s left-footed effort flew just wide of the post which meant the game remained goalless going into the interval.

Mark Trueman and Conor Sellars’ team went close to opening the scoring when Connor Wood’s effort from just outside the 18-yard box went narrowly off target.

The home team had another chance when a free-kick to the back post found Anthony O’Connor who turned his effort against the upright.

Moments later, the Iron almost went in front when the ball found substitute Ryan Loft - who was vitally thwarted by Hornby.

City went close to snatching the three points in second-half stoppage-time when Kian Scales’ dangerous low cross was agonisingly missed by Clayton Donaldson - which confirmed there would be nothing to separate the two teams on the day.
