The Bantams ended their Papa John’s Trophy campaign on a high - with a penalty shoot-out victory over Sky Bet League One Sunderland.
The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes, with goals from Theo Robinson for the Bantams and Nathan Broadhead for Sunderland, before two saves from Sam Hornby in the shoot-out saw City claim the extra point.
The first chance of the game fell the Black Cats' way, when Elliot Ambleton’s strike was deflected and saved by Sam Hornby.
City, however, having controlled large parts of the opening period, took the lead on 36 minutes, after a corner had been partially cleared.
Reece Staunton beat his man out wide before squaring for Robinson to convert - for his second goal in as many games.
Sunderland equalised early on in the second half, as Broadhead was played through on goal and smashed the ball past Hornby.
The home side looked certain to take the lead in the 70th minute when Leon Dajaku was through, forcing Hornby into a great save one-on-one. The ball fell to Will Harris whose header was blocked heroically on the line by Staunton.
Alex Gilliead came close to scoring the winner late on for the Bantams. Gareth Evans drilled the ball across the box but the midfielder's shot was narrowly wide of the goal.
Alex Pritchard hit the bar from a free-kick with just minutes to go for Sunderland, before the tie was taken to a shoot-out.
After Elliot Watt and Alex Pritchard both missed their sides' opening spot-kicks, the Bantams netted four out of their remaining four which, combined with another Hornby save, was enough to see City take the extra point.
