VERNAM SEES POSITIVES FROM NORTHAMPTON DRAW

21 November 2021

Goal-scorer Charles Vernam was eager to focus on the positives, following City’s 1-1 draw at home to Northampton Town in Sky Bet League Two.

The winger’s 67th-minute strike meant the Bantams came from behind to earn a point at the Utilita Energy Stadium, against their fourth-placed visitors.

Vernam insists City can build on their point and praised the character of the team at the way they responded to conceding the first goal.

He said: “It was a good point in the end. Conceding the goal was frustrating, but to show the character to come back into the game was great, and a really good sign going forward.

“We knew it was going to be a really tough test and, for us, it was about trying to match that work rate and apply our own style.

“It was a scrappy game without many clear-cut chances but, come 60 or 70 minutes, we came into it really strong.

“We have had a tough run of fixtures but have picked up a good amount of points.

“Of course, we would have liked more with some of the positions we have been in, but when we look back on this game, we will see it as a good point.

“They have been flying recently, so it is a good point and one that we need to build on.”

The 25-year-old confessed his delight at getting his name on the scoresheet.

Vernam has so far registered four goals and four assists in all competitions this campaign and is hoping to continue contributing for the team.

He added: “It is what my game needs to be about.

“For me, it is about creating chances, getting assists, and scoring goals because that is what I am in the team to do.

“Of course, I have to do my work defensively, but ultimately I am an attacker and I need to show that quality.

“This season, it has been more about that end product and I could have more than I already do.

“It is a learning process and it is about being in those positions and, ultimately, being clinical.

“If I take my chances and create assists then the team scores more goals and that will push us up the table.”
