YOUNG BANTAMS ADVANCE IN FA YOUTH CUP

4 November 2021

City’s under-18s made it through to the second round of the FA Youth Cup with a 2-0 victory away to category-one side Sunderland.

First-half goals from Jack Wilson and Dylan Youmbi were enough for the young Bantams to secure the win at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground, with first-team manager and assistant - Derek Adams and Mark Trueman - in the stands.

The first opportunity of the game fell to the Black Cats when a dangerous ball delivered into the penalty area found Henry Fieldson, but his header just missed the target.

Martin Drury’s side broke the deadlock with 13 minutes on the clock when the ball fell to Jack Wilson who worked space for himself, before striking a low, driven, left-footed effort into the bottom corner of the net.

The visitors went close to doubling their advantage when Yahaya Tunkara’s low cross was narrowly missed by Cole Roberts.

City did add a second when Bobby Pointon found Dylan Youmbi who cut inside before unleashing a low left-footed attempt from the edge of the 18-yard box which beat the goalkeeper.

The hosts had an opportunity to pull one back when Will Downing’s cross from the right-hand side found Joe Ryder, whose header was denied by City goalkeeper Harry Ambler.

The Wearside-based team went close to halving the deficit again when Ryder’s effort went just past the post as City took a two-goal lead into the interval.

The home team went close to scoring with just under an hour played when Caden Kelly’s left-footed cross found the head of Ben Middlemans, but it was tipped over the crossbar by Ambler.

A few minutes later, the Black Cats went close again, but Ryder’s long-range left-footed strike clipped the crossbar.

A cross then came into the City box from the right-hand side and it was Oliver Bainbridge’s turn to somehow be denied by Ambler inside the six-yard box.

The Bantams’ youngsters would go on to see the game out to pick up a memorable victory in the FA Youth Cup.
