BANTAMS HELD AT HOME

16 October 2021

A last-gasp Brett Pitman equaliser saw the Bantams held to a 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers, at the Utilita Energy Stadium.

Having taken the lead twice in the encounter, City were made to settle for a point, despite goals either side of half-time from Charles Vernam and Andy Cook.

Derek Adams' side started on the front foot and had an early penalty shout waved away by referee Andy Haines, after Cook’s strike ricocheted off a yellow and green shirt.

It was the Bantams who enjoyed a majority share of the chances in the opening 20 minutes - with Andy Cook and Charles Vernam coming close in quick succession.

The hosts deservedly took the lead in the 41st minute as Charles Vernam pounced on a loose ball that had been parried into his path by James Belshaw, who had kept out Yann Songo'o's initial header.

Vernam tapped home the rebound and City went into half-time ahead.

A breathless start to the second half saw the Gas draw level through Alfie Kilgour, who rose highest to connect with an inswinging corner and power home with his head.

The score was not level for long, however, as City came straight back on the attack through Callum Cooke.

The midfielder fed Vernam whose low, driven ball into the box found Cook - who drilled into the roof of the net to put his side back in the lead.

Cook had the ball in the back of the net once again, heading home from Callum Cooke's free-kick, but was denied his second - and his side's third - of the game by the linesman's offside flag.

It was the visitors however who took advantage of the end-to-end final 10 minutes - as Brett Pitman headed home in stoppage time to steal a point and end the tie level.
