OPPOSITION GUIDE: FOREST GREEN ROVERS

29 October 2021

The Bantams are back at the Utilita Energy Stadium this weekend - as they take on high-flying Forest Green Rovers in Sky Bet League Two at 3.00pm on Saturday.

Forest Green have had a strong start to the season, with the Greens sitting at the top of the table having won nine of their 14 games.

Rovers come to the Utilita Energy Stadium looking to round off a successful month - losing only one of six games, with their defeat coming against last weekend's opponents, Swindon Town.

We have put together an Opposition Guide to give you all the information you need to know about our 15th opponent of the season.

TRANSFER ACTIVITY

The Greens brought four new faces to the club over the summer, while parting company with five players.

INCOMINGS: Regan Hendry (Raith Rovers), Opi Edwards (Bristol City), Sadou Diallo (Wolves), Jack Aitchison (Barnsley, loan).

OUTGOINGS: Chris Stokes (Kilmarnock), Harvey Bunker (Chippenham, loan), Aaron Collins (Bristol Rovers), Adam Smith (free agent), Scott Wagstaff (free agent), Shawn McCoulsky (free agent).

ONES TO WATCH

Jamille Matt

Former Blackpool striker Jamille Matt has led from the front this season, with eight goals and seven assists across all competitions this season.

FGR’s talisman joined the club during last season’s transfer window - netting 16 times in his first campaign at the club, including a hat-trick against Scunthorpe.

The Jamaican-born striker is best suited to the role of a ‘target man’, with his aerial presence and poacher’s instinct contributing heavily to Rovers’ successes this season.

Kane Wilson

Right-back Kane Wilson has registered four assists and two goals this season, across all competitions.

The full-back’s desire to get forward adds a different dimension to Rovers’ play, with manager Rob Edwards favouring a formation with three centre-backs and attacking wing-backs.

Wilson netted a solo goal for the Greens in Saturday’s victory over Salford, picking up the ball just inside the attacking half before slaloming through the Ammies' defence and finding the top corner.

Matthew Stevens

Stevens plays alongside Jamille Matt in a front two which has so far complimented each other to ruthless effect.

At 5ft 9ins, Stevens benefits from the knock-downs his 6ft 1ins strike partner provides for him - using his pace to capitalise on any loose balls goalside of the defence.

The former Peterborough man is FGR’s second highest goalscorer this season, netting seven in all competitions.

CAPTAIN

Jamille Matt was named the Greens’ club captain at the start of the season, and has registered more goals and assists than anyone else at FGR so far this term.

Matt swept up the club awards at the end of last season - being voted both Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season after scoring 16 goals, including a heroic effort in the play-off semi-final.

MANAGER

Rob Edwards is the man in the dugout at the Fully Charged New Lawn Stadium, having replaced interim boss Jimmy Ball ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Edwards joins Rovers after working as the England Under-16s head coach and under-20 assistant for the FA.

The former Premier League centre-back's only other experience as the No.1 came with Wolverhampton Wanderers as the under-23s coach, where he achieved promotion to the highest tier of youth football.
