BANTAMS BACK TO WINNING WAYS

23 April 2022

City earned Mark Hughes' first victory at the Utilita Energy Stadium, with a 2-1 triumph over Scunthorpe United.

Two early goals from Jamie Walker and Charles Vernam were enough to see the Bantams return to winning ways.

City started incredibly, scoring within 20 seconds of the match kicking off. Walker found space inside the penalty area having been teed up by Charles Vernam, and slotted coolly past the goalkeeper.

Within moments, Vernam had made it 2-0 to the Bantams, to give them a commanding cushion after five minutes.

Vernam shifted the ball past a defender from 25 yards out and sent a curling effort into the bottom corner, beyond the despairing dive of Rory Watson.

In the 26th minute, Lee Angol was denied from point-blank range by a brilliant Scunthorpe block to stop a certain third City goal.

It was however the away side who pulled one back when Rekeil Pyke stole the ball from Alex Bass to score from close range.

Minutes later, City came close again when Walker was denied by Watson and Dion Pereira's rebounded volley whistled wide.

City's dominant first-half showing continued into the break, though, and they again went close on the stroke of half-time.

Vernam embarked on a driving solo run which ended with his shot cannoning back off the crossbar and eventually being cleared.

Despite the game slowing after the break, with 15 minutes to go, City came close from a corner. Fiacre Kelleher headed down to Caolan Lavery but he was unable to turn his shot on target.

Half-chances were created at both ends but no further goals were scored, meaning the Bantams took away all three points.
