City’s under-19s side clinched the EFL Youth Alliance North East title with a 2-0 victory away to second-placed Grimsby Town.

A goal in each half from Dylan Youmbi and Charlie Wood earned the youngsters all three points - and the title with two games to spare.

The victory means Martin Drury's team have now beaten each team they have faced in the league this season, on their way to becoming the first City side since 2013/14 to clinch the title.

City started strong against the Mariners, enjoying most of the possession during the opening period.

Bobby Pointon weaved his way through the Grimsby midfield, turning defence into attack by playing the ball through to Jack Wilson who forced a corner.

Edwin Essel stretched the City backline as the hosts looked to hit them on the counter, but George Thewlis was able to snatch the ball away from the Mariners forward.

A goalmouth scramble should have put the Bantams in front. They struck the post twice before Youmbi’s overhead kick was matched by goalkeeper Dec Dennis.

It was not long before Youmbi got his name on the scoresheet, however, coolly striking home before the break to finish off a neat team move and put City in charge heading into the break.

The hosts started the second half the brightest and came within inches of an equaliser. An in-swinging corner was whipped towards the near post but the glancing header was tipped over by Bantams stopper Heath Richardson.

Louie Chorlton nearly doubled the advantage for Drury’s side, striking a volley inches over the bar as City looked to finish the game off.

The second goal came in spectacular fashion in the closing stages, courtesy of Charlie Wood.

The midfielder surged forward and played a neat one-two with Oliver Norman, before finishing off a well-worked move by chipping the ball over the onrushing Dennis.

City’s goal celebrations were doubled by the ones after the game as the title was sealed. The young Bantams will now face Lincoln City at the LNER Stadium on Saturday April 30 before closing their season at home to Doncaster Rovers on Monday May 8.
