BANTAMS CLAIM FIRST THREE POINTS

13 August 2022

City secured their first Sky Bet League Two victory of the season, with a 2-0 triumph over Newport County.

A goal in each half from Richie Smallwood and Harry Chapman saw Mark Hughes' Bantams claim all three points at the University of Bradford Stadium.

City started on the front foot by immediately pressing forward. Chapman’s play earned the hosts a corner in the opening minute, and the Bantams began asking questions of Newport’s defence, with Lee Angol's effort saved by Nick Townsend.

It was Richie Smallwood who broke the deadlock, making City's pressure pay, with a sublime effort to open his account in claret and amber.

The home skipper found the ball 30 yards out, drove into space and curled a left-footed shot into the top corner with his weaker left foot.

Newport slowly started to come into the game with a few half-chances, but City quickly regained hold of possession and went in search for their second goal.

In the fifth minute of the six added at the end of the first half, the visitors' task was made even more difficult, when they were reduced to 10 men.

Andy Cook found himself through on goal after nicking the ball off Newport’s last man, Declan Drysdale. The Newport defender had no choice but to bring City’s No.9 down, conceding a free-kick on the edge of the area, and earning himself an early bath.

The second half started for Hughes' side exactly the same as the first, constantly applying pressure to a now 10-man Newport.

Within the opening five minutes of the second half, Scott Banks broke into the box and squared a pass to Lee Angol who bended his effort just wide of the post. It only looked like a matter of time before City were going to double their lead.

It took less than 10 minutes into the second period for Harry Chapman to get his name on the scoresheet, notching his first in claret and amber.

City's man of the match dribbled brilliantly into the area and managed to sneak an effort under Nick Townsend, before an acrobatic celebration in front of The Kop.

As the game entered its closing stages the Bantams found themselves creating a few further half-chances, but could not manage to find the third goal, as they held on for their second-straight victory in all competitions.
