Mark Hughes was delighted with the Bantams’ performance after his side beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in their opening Papa Johns Trophy outing of the campaign.

Hughes’ men went 1-0 up in the first half and, despite being pegged back shortly after, responded with two more goals after the break to secure three points in Northern Group H.

The City boss credited his team’s performance, and has called for the Bantams to take momentum into Saturday’s visit of Walsall.

He said: “I really enjoyed that, everyone played exceptionally well. The level of performance we have been able to hit tonight is really encouraging. This is as pleased as I have been this season.

“When teams open up against us and allow us to go toe-to-toe, we enjoy ourselves because we are a good side.

“When teams come and shut up shop, we find it slightly more difficult to unpick the lock, however there are ways and means around that which we are working on.

“Overall, I cannot highlight any negatives and it gives us a lot of encouragement to take to Walsall. The dressing room is a good place right now.”

Hughes made changes to his starting 11, praising the impact of Yann Songo’o, Matty Foulds and Luke Hendrie who entered the side for their first starts of the season.

He was also pleased with Timi Odusina, who made his debut, and goal-scorers Jake Young (2) and Kian Harratt.

The Bantams boss added: “They all did really well. When you are asked to perform and wear the shirt, you have got to make a statement, an impact, and they did that. Credit to them.

“Jake did really well, and Kian will always influence the game with the energy he brings, as well as his quality and enthusiasm.”
