HUGHES URGES BANTAMS TO 'FIND INSTANT REACTION'

Mark Hughes has encouraged his City side to “bounce back quickly” ahead of the Bantams' lunchtime trip to Gillingham on Sunday.

The Welshman is not disheartened by recent defeats to Leyton Orient and Northampton, as his men look to return to winning ways in Kent.

Hughes hopes the Bantams can put away more clear-cut chances and remain organised throughout the 1.00pm clash.

He said: “We are disappointed with the recent results because, in both games, we started brightly.

“It is about making an instant reaction in games when we are behind. We need to continue to have footholds and platforms in games that enable us to control.

“If we are over committing and trying to get back into games, that does not look organised, and it has been addressed this week.

“We have to make sure, when we have the momentum to capitalise, and when we are on top in matches, that is when we have to score.

“Once we score, we can manage the game, and get to the end of the 90 minutes in a winning position. We just have to make sure we bounce back quickly.

“The types of goals Orient scored, and them being scored in quick succession, made it very difficult for us to come back.

“We have struggled in the last two games to create enough clear-cut chances. We had opportunities where we did not even hit the target, so are looking to improve in that regard.

The City boss has warned his side to be cautious of Gillingham’s position in Sky Bet League Two, as Sunday’s hosts enter the encounter in the relegation zone.

The Welshman is however determined to turn recent results around and return to winning ways in the league ahead of a busy festive schedule.

He added: “Their season has probably not been what they had anticipated, but they will back themselves.

“Gillingham’s recent result in the FA Cup may well boost their confidence going into our game, so we have to be careful.

“They have got some good talent within their group so we have to be mindful, but it is important to start to get back on the winning track, and is an opportunity for us to prove ourselves too.

“We are determined to turn these results around, so I expect to see that on Sunday.”
