YOUNG BANTAMS EDGE OUT DONCASTER

14 February 2022

City’s under-19s secured their 10th win in 11 EFL Youth Alliance North East outings, with a 1-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Olivier Sukiennicki’s strike 20 minutes from time meant the young Bantams recorded all three points at their Woodhouse Grove training base, in a game which featured three red cards.

The home side went close early on when skipper Bobby Pointon tried his luck, but his attempt was kept out by the goalkeeper.

Dylan Youmbi then worked space for himself inside the penalty area before striking his effort just wide of the post, meaning the scoreline remained goalless heading into the interval.

Martin Drury’s side began the second period looking to break the deadlock, going close to scoring on a number of occasions.

After Sukiennicki had struck a left-footed effort narrowly off target, Cole Roberts had an initial attempt denied by the goalkeeper, before seeing his follow-up cleared off the goalline.

The hosts eventually broke the deadlock 70 minutes in when Sukiennicki received the ball on the right-hand side of the 18-yard box.

The Polish youth international skipped past the Rovers full-back before smashing the ball past the goalkeeper to give his side a deserved lead.

City were able to see the game out to move within a point of league leaders, Grimsby Town, with two games in hand.
