YOUNG BANTAMS HIT 10 PAST MANSFIELD

20 March 2022

City’s under-19s romped to an astonishing 10-0 victory over Mansfield Town - in their final outing of the regular EFL Youth Alliance North East season.

The young Bantams netted five goals in each half to pick up a remarkable triumph at the Horsfall Community Stadium, ahead of the start of their 'merit' round of fixtures to decide who will end the campaign as league champions.

The hosts broke the deadlock with five minutes on the clock when Charlie Wood’s cut back was finished off by the right foot of Cole Roberts.

City then doubled their advantage when Freddy Jeffreys’ outswinging corner was headed in by Sam Bentley.

Moments later, the Bantams added a third when, despite Roberts’ delicate chip coming back off the crossbar, Dylan Youmbi was on hand to finish the rebound with his left foot.

City made it four with just over half an hour played when another Jeffreys corner to the far post ricocheted in off Bentley for his second of the game.

The home team were then awarded a spot-kick which Dylan Youmbi stepped up to take, making no mistake from 12 yards out as the Bantams went into the interval five in front.

Just like in the first half, it was Roberts who scored the opening goal of the second period when he curled his right-footed effort from the edge of the penalty area into the top corner of the net.

City relentlessly continued at the Stags defence and added another when the ball fell to Youmbi just inside the 18-yard box. He unleashed a left-footed strike which beat the goalkeeper to complete his hat-trick.

Things got even better with an hour on the clock when substitute Keke Jeffers got in on the act, turning home a cross from the left-hand side.

Jeffers then added his second and the Bantams’ ninth of the game when he volleyed in fellow substitute Jack Wilson’s cross from the left-hand side.

The icing was put on the cake in stoppage time when Wilson broke forward and hit a right-footed effort which flew into the top corner of the net to ensure the Bantams reached double figures in the contest.

The triumph was the biggest in the EFL Youth Alliance North East division by any team this season and means, after Grimsby Town's 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town yesterday, City finished the regular campaign five points clear at the top of the table.

Martin Drury's young Bantams will now contest four 'merit' fixtures, to determine who will end the term as league champions.
