HUGHES CALLS FOR STRONG SUTTON DISPLAY

Mark Hughes expects his Bantams to show the same determination and character from their victory over Mansfield Town, as City prepare for a trip to the capital to face Sutton United on Saturday.

The Welshman acknowledges the problems the Us could cause with their direct approach, but aims to use the momentum built up in away performances to leave the VBS Community Stadium victorious once more.

Hughes said: “We showed great resolve and determination not to lose the winning position on Tuesday.

“We were taken aback by the the decision to send Matty Platt off, which lead to us conceding. Our reaction after that was really good, and shows the character of the group that I expect.

“Sutton can cause different problems for us, as they are quite a direct side.

“To an extent, they have not changed much since the last time we played them. We effectively stopped their progress to the play-offs, so that will give us confidence.

“When home teams need to have a real go and concede ground, that allows us to sit back and allow teams to come onto us.

“So, when we counter attack, we have better space and time to punish the opposition.

“The results are slightly better away from home, at the moment, and we are still working on getting that balance right.

“We are very close to having a performance that will click in all areas.”

Hughes is prepared for the challenge Sutton will provide, and is expecting them to rally after City’s impressive 4-1 victory last season, and with being without a win at home since mid-September.

He hopes his side can however dismiss their pressure and focus on their own performance.

“We believe we can cause problems if we play to our potential,” he added.

“There is always the worry of a ‘bounce-back performance’, but we are more worried about our positives and what we can produce.

“I believe we can replicate it on Saturday. It always seems that when City come to town, it has an effect, so everyone is ready to play against us.

“We are in a place now where we are enjoying going up against different sides. The whole team is in a good position to continue picking up points.”
