GILLIEAD RELISHING COMPETITION FOR PLACES

Alex Gilliead is buoyed by City's strength in depth and competition for places, as the Bantams prepare for a third-straight away fixture against Grimsby Town tomorrow.

Gilliead will be looking to win his place in the starting 11 back, after missing last week's victory over Salford City - in which Ryan East impressed - following the birth of his child.

The 26-year-old is enjoying his new position in the centre of the field, and insists the depth the Bantams boast is positive for the quality and hunger of the side.

He said: “Easty did really well at Salford. We want each other to do well, and we push one another on.

“Even if you look at the squad on Tuesday, it was still a really good 11 on paper, although the result did not reflect that. Even on the bench, the quality was still very high.

“Everyone knows that, if they drop their levels, even just a little, someone else will get their chance.

“I am enjoying it a lot in the middle. Obviously, it is something totally different for me, but I feel like I get more involved in the game.

“I can still improve, especially with my passing range. I also want to travel with the ball better. Sometimes, playing in the middle restricts that, but if I can bring that in, it can make my play better.

“I always like to work hard in pressing the ball and winning it back. I really enjoy it.”

In his second spell at City, Gilliead is encouraged by the current structure of management and admits there is “more of a plan in place”, as he and City aim to achieve this campaign.

The Newcastle United academy graduate also spoke of the club's new identity, and how sides have started to fear the Bantams, which Gilliead hopes to continue at Blundell Park.

He added: “No disrespect to previous managers, but there is more of a plan in how we want to play.

“The club has a clear identity now, especially on the footballing side.

“The gaffer has spoken about home games, and we have started to see teams fear coming to Valley Parade whereas, in the past, that perhaps has not been the case.

“We have the confidence now, beating Salford away and Stevenage at home. The momentum of the club is building and it can only be positive.

“On Saturday, we just have to focus on our play. The way we start games is so important. If we grab an early goal like we did at Salford, we can control the game a lot easier.

“The fans will back the home side so it will do us the world of good if we can get our noses in front, and hopefully get another three points.”
