BANTAMS SECURE BACK-TO-BACK WINS

15 April 2023

Mark Hughes' Bantams secured a second-straight victory, cruising to a comprehensive 3-0 win at Rochdale.

A first goal in claret and amber for Sam Stubbs gave the Bantams the lead early on, before a second-half own goal and Scott Banks' strike secured all three points for City.

Hughes' men came flying out of the traps and opened the scoring inside the first five minutes through centre-half Stubbs - via a Richie Smallwood free-kick.

The City captain whipped in a free-kick from the left which was met by the head of Stubbs, scoring his first goal for the club and City's first by a defender this season.

The hosts came close to levelling the scoring just after the 20th minute through striker Ian Henderson, as they rallied after falling behind. Harry Lewis rushed out of his goal to put off Henderson and the Rochdale man missed the mark.

Minutes later, Dale came close once again. Stubbs mistimed a header short of Lewis’ path but City’s No.1 came to his aid and saved Abraham Odoh’s effort, keeping City’s lead intact.

Scott Banks almost doubled the lead for the Bantams through a spectacular left-footed effort. The Scot’s curled effort pinged off the crossbar from 25 yards out, meaning City's advantage was held to just the one goal heading into the break.

In the first 15 minutes of the second half, neither team threatened to add to the score until Jamie Walker had his header from a corner cleared off the line. Chapman swung the set-piece to the back post where the Scot’s effort was inches from doubling the Bantams' lead.

City did however get their second goal with just over 15 minutes remaining, with the aid of Rochdale captain Ebanks-Landell.

Smallwood swung in another pinpoint set-piece and put the ball into his own net and the home defender got the final touch to turn into his own net.

City secured all three points after a deflected Banks effort gave the Bantams a 3-0 lead, in the closing stages. The Bantams winger struck a right-footed effort towards goal which took a nick and looped over Rochdale keeper Richard O’Donnell.

Today’s three points sees City now just two off the automatic-promotion places, and three off second place, heading into the final five games of the season.
