CITY WELL BEATEN AT MORECAMBE

19 August 2023

City were well beaten at the Mazuma Stadium this afternoon, losing 3-0 to Morecambe.

A goal in each half from Michael Mellon either side of JJ McKiernan's second-half strike were enough to seal a comfortable win for the hosts.

The opening 10 minutes at the Mazuma Stadium saw neither side able to gain real control of the game. The Bantams' best chance in the early stages came from Clarke Oduor, whose effort was wide of the target.

After City had worked to grow into the half, it was the Shrimps who opened the scoring through a Mellon free-kick. After Smallwood fouled Yann Songo'o on the edge of the area, Mellon placed his set-piece into the corner out of the reach of Harry Lewis.

The Bantams had possession and dictated the play for the remainder of the half, but were unable to carve open the hosts. City’s best chance came from Tyler Smith, who saw his effort saved by the goalkeeper.

The opening 10 minutes of the second-half followed a similar pattern to the closing stages of the first. Neither team were able to take a hold of the game, but it was City looking for the leveller as Smith's effort was deflected wide.

From the resulting corner, the Bantams came inches away from equalising. Smallwood’s whipped in set-piece was met by Matty Platt, whose headed effort was cleared off the line by Morecambe goalkeeper Stuart Moore.

As City continued to look for an equalising goal, the Lancashire side struck on the counter and doubled their lead thanks to JJ McKiernan. He played a one-two with Mellon inside the area, and slotted a right-footed effort past Harry Lewis.

City continued to push and looked to grab a goal and get back into the game. Alex Pattison powered through midfield playing Smith down the left flank, but his right-footed curled effort flew over Moore's crossbar.

With five minutes to go, the hosts were awarded an opportunity to make it three, from the penalty spot. Mellon stepped up and dispatched his spot-kick, sending Lewis to other way to score his second on the day and condemn City to defeat.

As the second half went into added-time, City pushed to grab a goal and came close from thanks to a few set-pieces, but unfortunate were not able to add to the scoreline, falling to defeat.
