Mark Hughes was "impressed with the intensity" his side showed, as City beat Accrington Stanley on penalties to progress in the Carabao Cup.

The City boss explained how he thought tonight's performance was "a step up from what we have seen so far this season", but still thinks there are things his side can improve on.

“I am pleased with the result, but I am also pleased with the performance,” he said.

“I thought it was a step up from what we have seen so far this season, both during pre-season and in the game at the weekend against Crawley.

“I was impressed with the intensity, the way we got out to people a little bit quicker than we did last time out.

“We are obviously disappointed with the goal we conceded.

“We just switched off and they were bright enough to take a quick corner and take advantage of (Andy) Cooky being off with his head injury.”

Hughes was also pleased with the way his players conducted themselves during the penalty shoot-out.

All four of City's takers buried their kicks to send the Bantams through, and the Bantams boss praised the effect of the Bantams supporters behind the goal.

“(The takers) Never looked in any doubt,” he added.

“They were all good penalties, all in the corners.

“Obviously, being in front of our fans was an advantage.

“We felt the fans' support tonight. They were great, and we thank them.”
