CITY EARN BATTLING POINT

29 December 2023

The Bantams rounded off 2023 with a hard-fought point, drawing 0-0 at home to league leaders Stockport County.

City started the brighter of the two sides with Clarke Oduor having two chances early on, but going into the break, both teams had work to do.

Stockport thought they had found the opening goal in the first half, but Isaac Olaofe was ruled to be offside, and Andy Cook would be denied in the second period by a spectacular save from Ben Hinchliffe, as the spoils were shared.

After a strong start from County, just before the 10th minute, Oduor picked up a loose ball and drove towards the Stockport goal, but his eventual effort was well blocked.

Eight minutes later, Oduor found space on the edge of the area and let fly, but his effort rolled narrowly wide.

City had another chance just before the half-hour mark as the returning Liam Ridehalgh found Alex Gilliead in the box, but his effort flew narrowly over the bar.

The visitors made a double change at half-time, but it was City who started the second period the stronger. Neat link-up play by Oduor and Cook found an advancing Tyler Smith inside the six-yard box, but his effort was well blocked.

Ridehalgh was dispossessed in a dangerous area as the clock ticked towards the hour mark. Ryan Croasdale was found in acres of space on the edge of the box but the ball skipped up off his foot and bounced away for City to clear.

With a little over 15 minutes remaining, City came within inches of breaking the deadlock, after a steady 10-minute period of pressure.

Vadaine Oliver brought the ball down well for Andy Cook, who escaped his marker and sent an arrowed left-footed effort towards the top corner, but Hinchliffe sprung to brilliantly turn his effort over and keep the score tied.

Both teams had spells on top towards the end, however neither could find the breakthrough and the points were shared.
