Returning to Youth Alliance Cup action, City’s under-19s battled hard against Mansfield Town but were held to a 1-1 draw against the Nottinghamshire outfit.
Harry Ibbitson continued his fine goalscoring form to give Neil Redfearn’s side the lead early on, but the Bantams were denied the victory through the concession of a late penalty.
Within the first five minutes of the game, City had taken the lead, as they bravely looked to exploit a counter-attacking opportunity.
When space opened up for Max Murray on the right wing, he took his time to whip in a gorgeous cross. It met the head of frontman Ibbitson who thundered his effort home.
As the game progressed and the Stags grew into the match, the Bantams’ backline showed their strength as they weathered storms of blocked shots and deflected crosses.
However, it was City’s attackers hunting the headlines, as 25 minutes in, Lewis Boney kept the pressure on Mansfield. The Stags could not clear the ball further than the edge of the box, allowing Boney to strike an effort that sailed just over the bar.
Just short of the hour mark, Franklin Denison demonstrated his fantastic flair as he danced around three players on the left flank. He then cut inside but his effort was well held by the goalkeeper, as the young Bantams seeked to double their lead.
With five minutes left of normal time, Ibbitson received a deflected shot on the right side of the box. He floated it onto the head of Kieron Mboma who nodded just over the crossbar from close range.
City deserved a second, but it was the visitors who came forward late on in search of a goal. A nice through ball was latched onto, but before the advancing Stags attacker could take advantage, Zac Hadi smothered the ball, preventing a shot.
Mansfield relentlessly pushed forward in search of an equaliser and deep into stoppage time, they had a golden opportunity when a push in the box from a corner granted them a penalty.
The spot kick was converted past Hadi to undo the Bantams’ valiant efforts. The game finished as a draw with City’s under-19s next in league action on Saturday against Notts County.
