Graham Alexander secured his first win in charge of the Bantams, as his side topped the Bristol Street Motors Trophy Northern Group F with an emphatic 5-1 victory against Barnsley.

City raced to an early lead inside the first two minutes, thanks to a Matty Platt header, before strikes from forwards Andy Cook and Tyler Smith put City in the driving seat going into the half-time interval.

Two further goals from Lewis Richards and Clarke Oduor rounded out a dominant evening in BD8, before a late consolation from Barry Cotter.

The result leaves City as Northern Group F winners, and in the hat for second round draw, where a home tie will await the Bantams.

The hosts started in electric fashion, as Alexander’s men opened the scoring within the opening two minutes.

Harry Chapman’s lofted cross was met by Platt, who rose the highest to head past Ben Killip, and to net his first in claret and amber.

Looking to double City’s advantage, Cook nicely slotted in Brad Halliday, who managed to offload a pass onto Tyler Smith, but the No.14’s strike was stopped by the legs of Killip.

It was not long after that the Bantams had their second secured.

Oduor picked out Cook with a pinpoint pass, which the No.9 took in his stride, and powered home to double City's tally for the evening.

It was a dominant first half for Alexander’s men as they raced to a third goal 10 minutes before half-time.

Adding to his hat-trick against Manchester City’s under-21s, Smith found the scoresheet again tonight after snatching the ball of a Tyke defender and crashing a right-footed effort past Killip to end an authoritative first 45 minutes for the West Yorkshire side.

In a hunt to find a consolation, Sam Cosgrove tested Colin Doyle with a headed effort on goal, but the veteran stopper was on hand to deny the target man.

Finding their groove once again, the hosts were rewarded with their fourth of the evening, through another defender scoring their first goal for the Bantams.

Cook proved a nuisnance once again inside Barnsley's area, but watched his dinked effort stopped by the Tykes' stopper.

The 'keeper's clearance fell only as far as Richards, who after taking a touch, curled an effort goalbound, before celebrating in front of the Morrisons Family Stand, and taking the game further away from the League One opposition.

Less than three minutes later, the hosts found the scoresheet once more.

Halliday's low cross was tapped in by Oduor, who found his second at Valley Parade, since arriving from the Tykes in the summer.

The clash did not end without a late fight from Neill Collins' men, as Barry Cotter picked out the bottom corner from distance.

The visitors kept City shot-stopper Doyle busy until the final whistle when Joe Ackroyd was denied from 10 yards, with a point-blank save from the Irishman, to keep the gap to a resounding four.

A comfortable and ruthless performance from the Bantams secured their progression into the second round of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy as Northern Group F winners.
