SMITH STRIKE GAINS BANTAMS VICTORY

25 November 2023

The Bantams earned a hard-fought first league win under Graham Alexander, beating Accrington Stanley 1-0 at the University of Bradford Stadium.

After a goalless opening period, City drew first blood shortly before the hour mark, with Tyler Smith's neat lob securing all three points.

The Bantams began well, going forward with attacking threat, and had a chance to open the scoring through Smith.

Countering effectively following an Accrington free-kick, Alex Gilliead’s pass picked out Smith in space, but City’s No.14 saw his shot blocked away, as the hosts looked to build momentum.

The visitors came close to opening the scoring shortly after, just after the 15th-minute mark.

Kody Adedoyin's powerful effort was saved by Harry Lewis at his near post as the visitors went in search of a goal.

As the half came to a close, Stanley continued to pressure City, but once again, a fantastic Lewis save denied Adedoyin and ensured the Bantams went into the break all square, having proved the better of the two sides after 45 minutes.

Alexander's men continued to pressure the away side into the second period and came close from a Richie Smallwood free-kick.

City’s captain whipped a cross to the far post, meeting the head of Andy Cook, but he saw his effort drift just wide of the post.

Only minutes later, City's pressure paid and they broke the deadlock with a brilliant Smith lofted effort.

A long-ball from Ciarán Kelly was flicked on by Cook into the path of City’s No.14, who dinked his left-footed effort over Jon McCracken to give the hosts a deserved lead, and take his seasonal tally to seven, and six in his last six matches.

City continued to pile the pressure on the visitors, almost grabbing a second minutes later through Kelly.

Some lovely play from Jamie Walker on the edge of the box opened space for Brad Halliday to whip a ball in where Kelly rose high, but his header brought a save from McCracken to keep the game at 1-0.

Accy continued to search for a equalising goal throughout the second period, but saw any attacking efforts snuffed out by City, rarely troubling Lewis in the second half.

The hosts saw out the rest of the game to come away with all three points, ahead of Tuesday night's trip to Forest Green Rovers.
