BANTAMS WIN IN DOMINANT FASHION

23 September 2023

A hat-trick from the returning Andy Cook helped the Bantams on their way to an emphatic 4-1 victory over Newport County at Rodney Parade.

After racing into a 3-0 lead inside half an hour in South Wales, a dominant performance saw City record their first away victory over the Exiles since 1985.

City started well and had the lead inside the opening 15 minutes. The dangerous Rayhaan Tullouch, who had started brightly on his full debut, broke into the box and centred for Cook who crashed a header home.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Bantams' sustained pressure paid, and they doubled their lead.

Kevin McDonald, back in the starting XI, swung a low, slide-rule ball across the six-yard box, for Tulloch to tap the ball past Nick Townsend in the County net at the far post.

City were flying in the first half and had raced into a three-goal lead before even half an hour had been played.

Cook turned his defender on a ball in behind and beat Townsend in the one-v-one, sliding the ball into the bottom-right corner for his second of the game.

Despite City still not taking their foot off the gas, the next goal would go the way of the hosts, as Omar Bogle pulled one back for Newport in the 35th minute, rounding Harry Lewis to slide the ball into an empty net.

A quieter second half ensued, with City holding onto their healthy lead and keeping the Exiles' advances at arm's length.

However, there was still time for Cook to cap off a sensational performance by completing his hat-trick in the second minute of added time.

He latched onto Liam Ridehalgh's cross and planted another unstoppable header into the back of the County net, as City left with three points in the bag.
