LATE HEARTBREAK FOR BANTAMS IN SEMI-FINAL

21 February 2024

The Bantams suffered late heartbreak in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy, as a late Wycombe Wanderers winner saw their campaign in the competition end in the Semi-Finals.

A dominant City performance from start to end was unjustified as a counter-attack goal in the first minute of added time from Wycombe substitute Matt Butcher sent the Chairboys to Wembley.

The Bantams started the stronger and had their first effort on target within the opening two minutes of the match, as Tyler Smith was played through on goal but his effort was held by Max Stryjek.

Calum Kavanagh latched onto a loose ball in the 18th minute and powered a shot towards the bottom corner, but it rolled narrowly wide of the mark as City continued to create chances.

The Bantams dominated much of the opening period with quick, intricate passing, but when the referee blew for half-time they had so far failed to capitalise on it.

But they started the second 45 as they had ended the first, with Smith and Kavanagh both seeing efforts well blocked as the one-way traffic continued.

Kevin McDonald let a curling effort fly from the edge of the area in the 53rd minute to continue the pressure, but it flew narrowly wide.

Oduor had another couple of efforts coming close, as did Calum Kavanagh and Tyler Smith as City's shot tally for the evening rose to 19.

But, after all the hosts' pressure, Wycombe snatched a goal on the counter attack in the opening minute of stoppage time, through Matt Butcher.

The ball was switched to the Wycombe substitute on the far side and he took one touch and hammered low under Colin Doyle, to break dominant Bantams hearts and send the visitors to the Wembley Final.
