DEFEAT IN SWINDON

27 January 2024

City fell to defeat at The County Ground this afternoon, losing 2-0 to Swindon Town.

A penalty for the hosts converted by captain Charlie Austin gave Swindon an early lead, with Dawson Devoy netting a second from close range just before the break to seal the points.

After a triple change at half-time, including returns to action for Jake Young and Lewis Richards, City tried to work a way back into the game but could ultimately not find a response.

Tyler Smith had the first City chance of the game in the eighth minute, latching onto a Brad Halliday cross but sending his effort wide of the post, before being met by the assistant referee's offside flag.

Smith broke through again minutes later but, after beating one of the Swindon defenders, he was crowded out and his effort was blocked and cleared.

The tide turned in the 16th minute when Ciarán Kelly conceded a penalty for a foul on Paul Glatzel, who had raced in behind the Bantams' backline.

Swindon skipper Austin dispatched the spot-kick to put the home side a goal to the good, despite Sam Walker diving the right way.

City looked for a response, as Andy Cook met Alex Gilliead's cross but saw his header well saved by Jack Bycroft just before half-time.

However, the home side found time in the second minute of injury time to double their advantage. A counter attack led by Glatzel saw him turn Sam Stubbs' challenge and square for Devoy, who made no mistake.

City made a triple change at the halfway stage in their attempts to get back into the game, with Young, Richards and Harry Chapman introduced.

Young carried an attacking threat for the Bantams and went close with 10 minutes to go. His neat turn on the edge of the area bought space for a curling, goalbound, left-footed effort, which had to be well parried by Bycroft.

The visitors continued to look for a way back. Late on in the game the ball fell to Chapman on the edge of the area, but his scuffed shot bounced into the keeper's arms, as Graham Alexander's side left empty handed.
