YOUNG BANTAMS VICTORIOUS IN HARTLEPOOL DUEL

City’s under 19s worked hard to begin the New Year in style as they claimed a 2-0 victory over Hartlepool United in the EFL Youth Alliance North East Division.

Neil Redfearn’s side won the three points comfortably as Donald Kamwa bagged early into the second half, followed by Lewis Boney’s second goal in as many games.

Hartlepool began the game on the front foot, but it was the Bantams who had the first clear-cut chance, 15 minutes in. The ball broke for Freddy Jeffreys on the edge of the box and his thunderous drive had to be acrobatically tipped over the bar by goalkeeper, Josh Mazfari.

The resulting corner almost provided joy too, when Harry Ibbitson’s header was deflected over the bar.

Twenty-one minutes in, City continued their promising ventures into the attacking third. Lewis Boney led a counter attack and switched the ball across the box to Gabe Wadsworth. Yet, the City captain dragged his shot just wide of the left post, keeping the game goalless.

In the last play of the first 45, Max Murray swung a ball in from deep. Frontman Ibbitson connected with another trademark header, however it was well held by Mazfari.

Not even a minute after the restart, City’s pressure told, as they took the lead.

A long ball from goalkeeper Zac Hadi was well controlled by Kamwa. He played into Ibbitson who escaped the attention of his defender. He returned the ball to architect Kamwa who slotted home from close range.

With Hartlepool failing to register a shot on target in the second half, the young Bantams were happy to dictate possession and only began to create chances later as the encounter progressed.

The first warning sign for the Monkey Hangers was an Ollie Thompson shot 75 minutes in. The substitute hit a low strike which Mazfari was equal to as he continued to keep the deficit to just one goal.

City continued their late pursuit for a second and were rewarded when man in form Lewis Boney got his name on the scoresheet.

Ibbitson turned provider again, as his ball across the six-yard box was met by Boney who powered it into the net.

The two goals were enough to get the Bantams over the line in a scrappy match they very much controlled. Redfearn’s side next face Birmingham City in their final group stage match of the Development Cup.
