Graham Alexander has called for his side to be ready from the first minute, ahead of their trip to the Wham Stadium to face Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

Alexander felt his side were suffering from “ring rust” in the first half of Tuesday's draw with Doncaster Rovers, hoping the midweek return to action will help get the players back in the rhythm of games.

“We have to be ready to go, straight from the off, against Accrington,” he said.

“Perhaps we suffered a bit of ring rust on Tuesday after the lay-off from games, but in the second half we looked better. We need that for a full game now.

“In the second half, we grew in confidence after the slow start. We had good chances but our general play was not up to our standards.

“We need to be better if we want to follow up on our aspirations for the season. We will be looking to reach our highest level on Saturday.”

The Bantams boss understands the task facing his side over the next two months, following consecutive league postponements, but believes City will rise to the challenges they will face heading into the business end of the season.

He is pleased to be welcoming back skipper Richie Smallwood from suspension this weekend, and is looking forward to having more players back available for the run in as they return from injury.

Alexander added: “We knew we were in for a busy period in the run up to the end of the season. It is even busier now with the games that have been called off being rearranged.

“If you ask any player, they want to play football and play as many games as they can.

“There is only so much you can do in training due to the high amount of games when you are playing at the weekend then midweek every week.

“Richie has a great influence on the squad. He makes the players around him better. We appreciate the value he brings to the squad, and are looking forward to having him back.

“When we do get in the Saturday-Tuesday rhythm of games, I believe the players will be ready to take on the challenges we will encounter.”
