18 July 2017

City made it two wins from their last two games in pre-season with a come-from-behind victory over National League neighbours Guiseley.

Following Saturday's win at German side TV Echterdingen, City fought back to claim a deserved 2-1 success over Adam Lockwood's Lions at Nethermoor.

Guiseley took an early lead through one of their trialist strikers but City's own trialist levelled things up in the second period.

Tony McMahon, who set up the Bantams' equaliser, then became the match-winner with a fine finish direct from a free-kick just outside the box later in the half.

McMahon was one of eight members of Stuart McCall's squad to get 90 minutes under their belts against Guiseley.

Guiseley - a side who usually give City a tough game at this time of year - had their moments but McCall's side seemed to get stronger as the match went on.

The hosts enjoyed a bright start to the friendly contest and they netted the opener after only four minutes.

Jake Lawlor had already headed narrowly wide from an earlier corner before two of Guiseley's eight trialists on show combined to give the Lions the lead.

From the corner-taker's ball into the box, Guiseley's trialist striker powered home a downward header into the corner.

Guiseley, who had also tested Colin Doyle in the City goal with a strike from another trialist on show shortly before the goal, arguably deserved to open the scoring, but City slowly grew into the contest.

Paul Taylor fired narrowly wide with a shot from the edge of the box, while McMahon saw a well-placed shot pushed behind by Jonny Maxted after the City skipper on the night had been picked out by Nicky Law.

The two combined again shortly afterwards, but McMahon could only send a free header wide following Law's flighted ball into the box.

Taylor, who looked a busy presence in an attacking midfield role, then fired another shot just wide on the twenty-minute mark.

Although City were looking largely comfortable in possession for most of the half, Guiseley - capable of some bright football themselves at times - thought they had doubled their lead after half an hour.

A crisp angled strike from one of Guiseley's trialists inside the box saw the ball whistle into the top corner, only for celebrations to be cut short by the linesman's flag.

City's final opening of note in the first period saw Dominic Poleon fire straight at Maxted after latching onto a ball over the top.

If McCall's men had looked comfortable for large parts of the opening half, City seem to step things up further after the break.

Nathaniel Knight-Percival headed narrowly past the post from a corner. Patrick and Taylor then forced saves from Maxted.

Knight-Percival went close again from another City set-piece before the Bantams eventually managed find a leveller from a dead-ball situation.

From McMahon's corner delivery, City's trialist central defender powered home a header into the far bottom conrer.

McMahon then went from provider to scorer fourteen minutes from the end.

The right back fired the Bantams into the lead direct from a free-kick, his effort from just outside the box curling into the corner.

As both sides made changes in the latter stages of the game, Guiseley did engineer one final chance to force an equaliser but Doyle saved well from a trialist forward deep inside the box.
